Yorkshire Water Performance

  • Yorkshire Water was responsible for 260 pollution incidents in the 12 months March 2025 to April 2026, an average of five per week, a 72% increase.
  • There were 13 serous pollution incidents making YW one of the worst performers in the country.
  • In 2025, the average time for Yorkshire Water to report a pollution incident was 19 hours.
  • The total number of confirmed pollution incidents recorded against Yorkshire Water in 2025 was 494. This is a 99% increase from 2022 when they recorded 248 pollution incidents.
  • Yorkshire Water was responsible for 51,404 sewage overflows, that’s 1000 a week, lasting for 285230, the equivalent of 32 years. All the overflows were directly correlated to rainfall. Of those 1,204 incidents were ‘dry’ spills i.e. illegal sewage dumping when there was no rain.
  • In 2025, Yorkshire Water recorded the second most Dry Day spills of all water companies.
  • Yorkshire Water currently leaks 260m litres of water a day and its recent (2025) drought permit was to extract 120m litres of water a day.
  • Yorkshire Water was found to have mis-managed wastewater treatment works and wider sewer networks including their operation of storm overflows. Currently subject to a £40m redress package.
  • The Environment Agency downgraded Yorkshire Water from three stars to two in 2025 and is due to downgrade again to one star this year.
  • Yorkshire Water is also still under criminal investigation by the Environment Agency.
  • Ofwat classifies Yorkshire Water as ‘lagging behind’ (2025).
  • Ms Shaw appeared in front of the EFRA Committee with the Director of Finance, stating that Yorkshire Water’s asset health is poor, whilst Yorkshire Water reports that in the previous PR19 Yorkshire Water underspent its allowance by 31%, but had also been recording profits year on year. 4% of discharges in 2024 were attributed to ‘hydraulic capacity failures’ (insufficient capacity in the network i.e. spills not from ‘exceptional circumstances’ nor ‘asset maintenance’).
  • Yorkshire Water’s bills are going up by 41% from 2024 to 2030.
  • Nicola Shaw is the CEO. Her salary for Yorkshire Water has risen this year to £730000 and she receives a payment of £660,000 from the parent company Kelda Holdings. Totalling £1.3million.
  • In 2026 YW was fined one of top fines of 30 of all time.
  • The last sewage discharge by Yorkshire Water that was prosecuted by the Environment Agency occurred in 2019.
